CDPAP to PCA FAQs

What’s the Difference?

As a PCA, you’re employed by an agency — not the patient. That means:

  • No need for patients to hire or train you — the agency handles that.
  • The agency also ensures you’re scheduled and covered.

Your Role with Patients

  • Patients can choose whether to accept or decline caregivers — so finding the right match matters.
  • You’ll assist with daily needs and follow their care plan, providing essential, non-medical support.

What’s Required to Become a PCA?

All PCA staff must complete:

  • A criminal background check
  • Drug screening
  • Training that prepares you to support patients effectively

Certification & Registration

  • After finishing PCA or ACD training, you’ll receive your certificate within 5 business days.
  • You’ll be listed in the official Home Care Worker Registry, ready to start work.

Who Can You Care For?

Generally, you cannot provide care for your following relatives:

  • Parents
  • Sons / Sons-in-law
  • Daughters / Daughters-in-law

You can care for other relatives who don’t live with you.

Medication Rules

As a PCA, you can’t administer medication (oral or IV), or perform skilled nursing tasks but you can assist by:

  • Reminding patients to take their medication
  • Watching for side effects
  • Reporting issues to a licensed nurse
